A common question from our customers is: When is the best time to visit the Philippines? Well, I’d say it depends on your preferences. Obviously the weather and occasional typhoons is a factor, but how about number of other visitors? Many of our customers prefer to get off the beaten path and enjoy the remote paradise experienced on our tours without the inundation of the tourist crowds from all the other operators.
Weather is a factor
As you can see from the above graph, the driest months would be from around November through to the end of May (check out our weather forecasts page). But note that the average hours of sunlight per day remains relatively the same. During the rainy season we find that it mostly only rains at night, when we are asleep, with only shorter bursts of rain during the day, when it is mostly sunny. Note that the temperature is roughly the same all year.
But during this rainy season, the weather generally passes through in pulses, so you can get a few days in a row of heavy rainfall, with not so much sun, followed by a great week or two of vacation sunshine. These pulses passing through can occasionally culminate in tropical storms, as seen in this graph below:
So from July through to the end of October, maybe a bit of November, there could be a greater risk of a typhoon disrupting your tour. As explained in our cancellation policy, during such risk, not only can your tour simply be delayed or extended (whereby you would only pay extra for your accommodation and own costs), you can also use the government two week cyclone forecast page up to even a few days before securing your tour.
Number of tourists is a factor
For that we can use two graphs. This one from a commercial data collection website (period from May 2023 to April 2024):
and this one drawn from our own records of the number of tours we organized, by month, over the past 8 years of our existence (check out the fantastic reviews from our customers!):
We find our graph a better prediction of the tourist traffic traveling through the Palawan area. From that we can generally say that May through to the end of November is a good period to visit if you want to escape the crowds.
Consolidated graph – synopsis
I combined the data above into a single consolidated happy factor graph, depicting the percentage affect of all the factors, to come up with the following:
This is just my opinion and a general estimate, assuming you prefer to get away from the crowds and the rain, with the happiness factor in December skewed by the fact that it contains both Christmas and New Years!
Note also that during April and May the air can stand still, and without a fan in your beach hut (only a few resorts have generators running all night) it can get uncomfortably warm at night (although great during the day because the water is flat and snorkeling fantastic as you cool off in the ocean).
But we can help you with all these peculiarities as there are many accommodation options and other variables to choose from.
