To get to our house you can fly into Iloilo City and from there take a shared van, perhaps to SM CIty Mall, and from there take a taxi to the port/ferry. Alternatively I believe you can take a taxi straight from the airport to the port/ferry for about 500p, but make sure you do not take any of the mafia taxis as soon as you step out of the airport but rather keep walking farther to where the vans are and ask around. Or the best option is to simply download the Grab app to your phone and hail a cab that way, like Uber. Least expensive and most reliable option.
Now, keep in mind that to explore Guimaras island, where we live, it’s best if you have wheels. When you get off the pedestrian ferry once on Guimaras, others have found it easy enough to find a motorcycle rental for 500p/day, but perhaps you might want to rent longer term from something you find in Iloilo. If you find a reliable partner, we would be happy to post it here for others. Otherwise, we are about 15km from about 6 beaches, so you can walk too and lots to see in our immediate area.
If you do have motorized wheels (bicycle shouldn’t be a problem on the pedestrian ferry) then you need to take the ferries for those. Ask for the procedures once you get there. You need to buy a ferry terminal ticket, and then a separate ticket for the ferry. The latter can be purchased directly on the Montenegro ferry, which we usually take, while the tickets for the FF ferry needs to be purchased from a booth there. Since they know us they usually buy the tickets for us for a 20p tip. You can try the same.
As with Iloilo, the pedestrian and vehicle ferry terminals are in slightly different locations, so make sure you go to the right one, depending on your situation. In the above pic, the left circle is for vehicles and the right one for pedestrians. Either way you will go to the intersection where the 711 is and continue as the yellow arrow pointing down, along the island’s main highway.
After that it is an easy ride along the main highway (you will turn right not long after you leave the ferries, two rights if driving), through the island’s biggest town of Jordan, all the way down to the yellow circled Baranguay of Lucmayan, where we live.
Our house is the yellow blob next to the road with the big yellow arrow pointing to it. At the house there is a Smart mobile signal (not Globe), so you might want to get that sim card, otherwise you can use our Starlink wifi while here. But, even so, the signal gets rather weak or non-existent along your journey here, in which case you might consider downloading the maps.me app, which does not require an internet connection, to get here.
On the above map our favourite beach Alubihod is circled, as well as Guisi, for your reference. Nature’s Eye restaurant has a great view but they are expensive, and Makarios restaurant is pretty cool, but that should all be explained in our Guimaras Things to Do page.
As you get closer you will pass the Lucmayan Elementary School on your right hand side. Keep along the main road, do not turn right at the intersection, and if we are at home, soon enough you will see our grey Toyota Innova parked on the left side of the road, as you see in the above pic.
Better to park your vehicle somewhere around the car. Once you walk across the road you will see our amazing bridge with people eating dogs guarding the way to our house in the background in the jungle.
If you have no vehicle, you can jump on a jeepney at the pedestrian terminal. Just say you want to get to Lucmayan, where it is the last stop. Avoid taking other jeepneys which do not go that far so you do not have to complicate things by transferring to another jeepney. The jeepney will turn to the right at the intersection where the Lucmayan Elementary School is. After that it will go a not great distance to the local municipal hall, where it will park and wait to go back from where it came. Ideally you will want to get off at the intersection where the elementary school is, because that is where all the tricycle taxis wait for customers. A fair price to our house is something like 40p. You can always say to the house of the barefoot foreigner 🙂
