If you are in a rush, you can book an entire route instead of custom choosing which places you want to stay at. You only pay $5 deposit per room per night in advance, and the rest you always have the option to change your mind once you get there. Therefore, the total cost of the tour beyond the initial deposit is meant to be only indicative.
